Whenever a translator encounters a difficult or hitherto unknown term in a CERN document to be translated, he/she undertakes a thorough and wide-ranging terminology search making full use of the following resources in the following sequence:
- monolingual, bilingual and multi-lingual technical dictionaries and glossaries available in hard copy in the TM library
- Web search (on-line glossaries and corporate websites)
- full consultation of source-text authors and network of technical contacts throughout CERN
By systematically following this rigorous procedure the translators ensure that the terminology used is as close as possible to the authentic terminology used both inside and outside CERN.
All new terms translated in this way are then entered into the TM glossary of CERN-specific terms for reference and future use by colleagues.
