Whenever translators encounter a difficult or hitherto unknown term in a CERN document to be translated, they undertake a thorough and wide-ranging terminology search making full use of the available resources, including:
- monolingual, bilingual and multilingual technical dictionaries and glossaries
- internet search (online terminology databases and corporate websites)
- full consultation of source-text authors and network of technical contacts throughout CERN
The translators thus ensure that the terminology used is as close as possible to the authentic terminology used both inside and outside CERN.
All new terms translated in this way are then entered into the database of CERN-specific terms for reference and future use by colleagues.
